Annotated Bibliography Instructions As part of the “Case Details” assignment due during Week 5, your group will create an annotated bibliography, or a list of references (bibliography) with notes for each entry (annotated). Each group member will be expected to contribute 5 entries to the group’s bibliography, and to have these entries ready for the group to submit the assignment on time. It is expected that each group will work together to ensure that there are no repeat entries – each student should be annotating 5 different sources. The purpose of this assignment is to familiarize you and your group with some research about your topic – to see what scholars are writing about and to help you narrow down to a specific, manageable research question and select relevant theories and methods for your project. The sources should be academic research articles,

as relevant to your project topic as possible. Google Scholar https://scholar.google.com/ and the UO library’s search function https://allianceprimo.hosted.exlibrisgroup.com/primoexplore/search?vid=UO&lang=en_US&mode=advanced&fromRedirectFilter=true are good places to start. If you’re not sure if a source is an academic research article, please ask me or Amanda. If you have trouble finding sources, the librarians at the reference desk at the UO library can readily assist you. Each entry of the annotated bibliography should consist of the following: 1. A full citation for the source, using American Sociological Association (ASA) format, which is described here: https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/asa_style/references_page_formatting.html. Please ask your group members or stop by office hours if you have questions about the format of the citation. 2. A sentence stating the article’s research question or goal (Please note: Neither this nor anything else for this assignment should be taken directly from the abstract. As I note below, you’ll need to read, or at least skim, the article, to complete part 4 below. Additionally, copying from the abstract of an article is still plagiarism.) 3. A sentence stating the article’s main argument or main findings 4. A brief statement about what you found useful about this article for your project. This could relate to one of the article’s findings, its main argument, or one of its smaller/less significant arguments but one you found relevant to your project. It could be a theory the article used that you think might be useful for understanding your own data, or something from the article’s literature review. Or it could be something from the article’s methods. It could be something you disagree with about the article or some questions the article brings up for you. Whatever you choose, it should NOT be a summary of the article. It should be what you found most relevant from the article for YOUR project. Thus you will need to read, or at least skim, the article. Reading is recommended for fuller comprehension. This entire entry for each source should not be more than about a paragraph.
