It is designed to get you thinking about Dorothy Allison’s book, as well as about the role gender, gender identity, and/or sexuality has played in your own life. What are two or three things you know “for sure”? Part One: 2 or 3 Things About 2 or 3 Things Write a 500-word analysis of Dorothy Allison’s book, Two or Three Things I Know for Sure. What are the things she knows “for sure,” and what does that mean? Obviously 500 words isn’t very long, so you should focus your analysis on 2 or 3 of the themes, scenes, or characters in the text that strike you as most interesting, important, or complex. Part Two: My 2 or 3 Things I Know for Sure Choose a concrete, specific memory to write a story about. This should be a memory of a time when gender, gender identity, or sexuality played a role in your life (positive, negative, or mixed). Perhaps it was a time when you were expected to be or Dr. K.’s mother (right), behave in a certain way because of your gender or sexuality. Perhaps it was a time grandmother, and uncle, circa 1958. when you felt at odds with what was expected of you. Perhaps it was a time

when you (or others!) were confused about what your identity was, or what it meant. Write a story (illustrated with images) inspired by the format of Dorothy Allison’s Two or Three Things I Know for Sure. Your story should include at least three images* and at least 500 words of text (please do a word count). It should also include at least three italicized refrains adapted from Two or Three Things I Know for Sure: “Two or three things I know for sure, and one of them is…” Keep in mind that 500 words is not very long, so you want to think in terms of a very concrete, specific memory to write about. Bring that memory alive with concrete language and vivid sensory details. Try to make us experience it, as Allison does in her book. Aside from those requirements, you are free to be as creative as you like with this assignment. You may take a genuine tone, as Allison does, or a mocking one. Your story may be sad or funny, angry or inspiring, philosophical or poetic or satirical.
